Building my first Custom-Built PC

Welcome back to my blog! In this entry I want to tell you guys about my “new” PC which I built myself already half a year ago, since I got it the quality of everything I do related to technology has gone up by a lot, I am much more efficient and in general it has opened me the gates of content creation in the new age wide open, but before I get to how I use this computer nowadays I want to tell you guys about the process of building it, and how everything went from when I got interested in getting a PC to when I finally got it up and running.

My interest in buying a pc dates way back to 2016 when the HTC Vive Virtual reality headset released and some youtubers that I was watching started doing videos and reviews on virtual reality. The whole concept of VR blew my mind, it created a whole new world that you could access right from your bedroom, and to me that was amazing, at that time I was using a little surface as my computer which I used for school homework, a bit of coding and not much else, and I was completely happy with it. I couldn’t play any games that weren’t 2D or super low quality, but I did not have that need as I had my Ps4 which I used with all my friends, however, when I looked into the prices for the VR headsets I was shook to find out that not only were the headsets priced at an ungodly 600€, but I additionally needed a computer with pretty good specs in order to run VR, so yeah, I definitely scrapped the idea as those quantities of money where unheard of for me at the time, but I started to see the appeal of having a good PC.

Over the next years I would start saving up money for a PC but I must admit that with such a huge price tag that seemed so far away, it was hard to keep myself diligent and not spending any money on games or other similar stuff, so I did not end up saving practically anything. Roll 2019 however, in this year I started consuming more English content and my focus of interest shined on twitch, I started watching many live channels and I thought that it was crazy how people could create content by having fun and goofing around for a living. I know that many kids my age thought of the same “Hey this guy plays Fortnite for 8 hours a day and gets paid, I could do that!” But my interest and understanding of this kind of content creation went far deeper than that, I understood that these streamers were not only playing games nonstop, but creating content in an orderly, and frankly quite smart matter, and when I understood that, I became kind of obsessed, I began researching on how the algorithms of these websites worked, what did the people like and what they didn’t, I started to keep up with the latest trends, and slowly but surely I gained a deep understanding on twitch, content creation in the new era, and livestreaming without even knowing.  One day like many others I was talking to a friend about all of this stuff for the 1000th time, when he finally asked the question all of my friends were wondering at the time, “Hey man, you seem to know a lot about livestreaming, why don’t you give it a go yourself?” and as obvious as it seems I never really thought about it before, lots of friends had tried but failed as they where not bringing any value or quality to their streams, I guess that I didn’t feel like jumping on the bandwagon of being that guy obsessed with being the next ninja, and wanting to make a living out of gaming just to find out it’s hard and give up in a week or two, so the idea hadn’t really crossed my mind, but I realized that I actually did know a lot about it, and the fact that I couldn’t give a good answer to my friend’s question made decide that I would give livestreaming on twitch an honest attempt, so that’s when I decided that I needed a good computer in order to stream.

At first I wanted to go for a simple configuration with specs low enough for me to stream at a very entry level, and so I designed that configuration, it turned out to be around 1000€ but as I reached the budget and the time for buying it came closer, my father took a look at the components and decided it was not good enough, you see, he has this philosophy of not cheaping-out on a low quality product and end up having to upgrade in a couple of years, but instead buying as good quality as you can get and have the same product for a long while, I completely understand this philosophy and I think it’s great, however at the time I did not have anymore money and I was hasty to get my hands on the PC so I did not agree with him, however, he reminded me that the new series of Nvidia graphics cards had just come out and that I had some crypto which had gone up quite a lot that I could sell in order to get one. I had completely forgotten that I had some crypto, whenever I buy such an asset I don’t think of it as spending money but just keep it in the back of my mind for the long term, however, this was a good enough reason to sell it, and so we did, and with that money we ended up upgrading the RAM memory from 16Gb to 32Gb, we upgraded the SSD storage from 500Gb to 1Tb, and finally the GPU from an RTX 2060 to a RTX 3080, and to this day I am so thankful that we did, because there soon would be a shortage of GPU chips and that same Graphics card would triple in value. So, we waited a couple of days for all the components to ship out and we got to work.

At that point I had become so obsessed with getting a Pc that I did not need no guide or tutorial to build it, and slowly but surely, I (with my father’s help) managed to build this monster of a Pc which I now use daily for programming, gaming, livestreaming, schoolwork, entertainment, songwriting, etc.

The PC in it’s full glory

I hope you enjoyed my little story of how I got this pc and on a similar note if you were interested which my twitch shenanigans, I am currently working on a new entry about my livestreaming career, so I am also quite excited about that. It is finally summer again so you can expect me to be back at programming and doing all of that fun stuff, though as you can see, I do take a while to give you updates on it, as this part of documenting my work is not the most thrilling for me, also as of summer 2021 the prices on VR have become way more reasonable for the most part, and I have finally managed to buy myself a headset, so I may try to program a little game for it and show you guys, but that’s all I’m going to tease you for today, goodbye!
